What Happens to Used Tires?
What Happens to Our Used Tires?
In 2009, RRFB Nova Scotia implemented a new strategy for the recycling of used tires in Nova Scotia. The strategy now converts used tires into a product called Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA).TDA is a multi-purpose rubber product made from processing used tires into consistent shapes ranging between 25mm and 300mm in size. Produced by cutting scrap tires into 25mm and 300mm pieces using machinery specifically designed for handling tires it is a multi-purpose product that has a variety of uses including construction and engineering.
TDA allows the province to develop a "made in Nova Scotia" solution for its used tires. By developing the infrastructure to process TDA, we are manufacturing a multi-purpose and cost-effective product that meets specific engineering requirements and creating value-added manufacturing jobs for Nova Scotians.
Nova Scotia’s tires are processed into a TDA product and marketed by Halifax C&D Recycling Ltd. To learn more about Halifax C&D Recycling Ltd., please visit: halifaxcdrecycling.ca
Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA)
As the agency responsible for waste diversion in the province, RRFB Nova Scotia has been given responsibility for finding a TDA solution for used tires. Based on the recommendations of the Interdepartmental Committee on Used-Tires and the approval of the Minister of Environment, RRFB Nova Scotia has conducted a Request for Proposal (RFP) and selected the proponent with the most economically viable business plan.![]() |
