Accomplishments
In the fiscal year 2011, RRFB Nova Scotia-funded programs diverted a wide range of materials from disposal:
Beverage Program
- Containers on which deposits were received: 391 million (376 million in 2010)
- Redemptions: 309 million containers (301 million in 2010)
- Recovery rate: 79.0% (79.9% in 2010)
- Tires collected: 1.13 million (1.09 in 2010)
- Tire recovery rate: 89.8% (82.9% in 2010)
- Containers sold: 2.15 million (1.99 million in 2010)
- Containers collected: 389,900 units (402,000 in 2010)
- Paint collected: 450,708 litres (368,755 litres in 2010)
- Used paint container recovery rate: 18.2% (20.2% in 2010)
- Non-program materials: 33,519 units (41,429 in 2010)
- 111,000 tonnes of residential organic waste diverted through residential, commercial and institutional collection at municipal composting facilities
- 52,640 tonnes of recyclable material diverted through municipal curbside programs
- 100,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste material diverted from landfill
- $8.2 million (83.5% of net revenues) to Nova Scotia's 55 municipalities for diversion credits and funding for local recycling, composting and other programs
- $1.8 million (includes allocations to regions) to educate Nova Scotians and build ongoing support for environmental action
- Approved $270,320 for new research and value-added manufacturing projects that support entrepreneurs and encourage innovation in waste reduction.
