Louis Samson in Little Anse, Richmond County is a composter extraordinaire. Not only does Louis educate others about the right way to compost, but he also advocates for composting in his community. He also volunteers his time collecting organics from local families and stores, and composts for some of his neighbours. He has 35 composters in his 5-acre back yard and composts more than 3 tonnes of organic materials each year, using it as fertilizer for his gardens.

Louis gives the gifts of education and advocacy, and shares his vegetable harvest with his neighbours. Louis Samson considers composting an investment: compost creates "black gold", nature is the 'bank', and 'the dividend' is a cleaner, healthier planet for everyone. Louis Samson exemplifies one person's power to make a difference. Twenty-five years ago, Louis became interested in composting when he planted a garden. Today, he's planted an awareness that's taken root - an awareness of the value of composting, and an understanding of how to do it correctly.

Louis Samson accepted the Volunteer of the Year award at the 8th Annual Mobius Environmental Awards held in Halifax on April 27, 2006.
