To mark its 10th anniversary, the Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre staged a series of public events, but when the anniversary day arrived, a huge storm hit. In spite of the bad weather, three hundred people showed up the pouring rain for the celebrations. That turnout is a reflection of how much impact the Centre has had on the community, and how much the community feels a part of its efforts.
Over the past few years in preparation for the landfill closure on December 31, 2005, Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre 'ramped up' its environmental education, resource materials and face-to-face community outreach programs designed to encourage residents to reduce waste even further. Among the environmental education tools and initiatives created by the Centre are videos and DVDs that promote waste reduction, partnerships with other municipalities, a business symposium, and a monthly 'Business Rewards Program' recognizing local companies. Perhaps the most popular initiative is 'Trash Talk', the monthly radio talk show created to discuss recycling issues.
For their exemplary public outreach initiatives, the Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre was awarded the 2006 Mobius Environmental Award for Waste Reduction Education.
