This year's winner of the Enviro Depot of the Year Mobius Environmental Award is a model for Enviro-Depots around the province. Arol Wentzell's family operation, which runs out of his garage in New Germany, is not only a model of efficiency and organization, it's an example of how one small Enviro-Depot can turn an entire community around.
All year long, residents of Lunenburg County come to Wentzell's Bottle Recycling to learn the rules of recycling and to remember Arol's son, Wayne Wentzell, who died of cystic fibrosis nine years ago. It was Wayne's idea to start the Enviro-Depot with his dad and since his passing; Arol Wentzell has set up a scholarship fund in his son's memory. To date, over eleven thousand dollars has been raised with the funds going toward students who have CF or students who want to study carpentry, which was one of Wayne's passions. Customers dropping off their containers at Wentzell's Bottle Recycling can donate their bottle refund to the scholarship fund. Today, thanks to the Wentzells, recycling is a way of life in New Germany.
Arol Wentzell accepted the Mobius Award for ENVIRO-DEPOT™ of the Year on behalf of Wentzell's Bottle Recycling at the 8th Annual Mobius Environmental Awards held in Halifax on April 27, 2006.
