Louisiana Pacific Corporation - East River Mill in Chester turns hardwood logs into hardboard siding and interior wood products, which are sold in Canada and internationally. This major producer made 'environmental responsibility' its business by hiring an Environmental Manager and introducing an Environmental Management System in 1996, making Louisiana Pacific a leader in the industry. The System enables employees to make decisions about how best to protect the environment and has led to an 80 percent reduction in reportable environmental incidents company-wide.

An on-site composting operation has proven to be highly successful, diverting more than 47,000 tonnes of material per year to valuable compost that is purchased by local landscape companies and residents. For their efforts, Louisiana Pacific's East River Mill was awarded the 2006 Mobius Business of the Year Award. Phil Ellwood, Plant Manager, and Melissa MacIntyre, Environmental Manager, accepted the award on behalf of the company at an awards celebration on April 27, 2006.
