The more than 250 Primary to Grade 6 students at Beaver Bank Kinsac School show it's never too early to take personal responsibility for keeping the planet clean. The school is headed towards "zero" waste and has launched an extensive source-separation program that involves the whole school. So far this "green team" effort has diverted more than 60 per cent of the waste materials from the landfill. The school caretaker says she now has only three bags of garbage a day to handle - compared to the more than seven she handled in the past. Students present eco-skits at assembly, put posters up to create awareness around waste reduction… and now they're getting into energy reduction, developing an awareness campaign around that too. Beaver Bank Kinsac School is not only educating and advocating - by example, it's also a 'lesson in leadership'.

For their keen enthusiasm toward "zero" waste, Beaver Bank Kinsac Elementary School was awarded the 2006 Mobius Environmental Award for School of the Year.
