Problems seem to be creative business opportunities for L + M Feed Services. Consider this: the company is, literally, turning chocolate and dust into groundbreaking ideas. When Ian MacHattie began his business in Onslow, Colchester County back in 1991, he knew farmers needed to reduce their feed costs - and reduce their dependency on imported grains. So L + M Feeds began blending food waste with traditional grains - and started making a balanced feed that met farmer’s demands. Today, L + M Feeds is turning by-products generated by chocolate and candy manufacturers, grain elevators, microbreweries and mills into new business opportunities. Their newest line of animal feed is made completely from recovered food waste, and their new feed recipe can replace grains in the standard feed. Plus it blends something sweet into the mix - by-products from chocolate manufacturers. L + M’s innovative technology is helping to keep feed costs reasonable for local farmers, helping to divert 3,200 tonnes a year of organic waste from our landfills - and helping to put even more contented looks on cows faces! For their innovative practices, L + M Feed Services Ltd. was awarded the 2006 Mobius Environmental Award for Innovation in Waste Reduction.
