Since 1981, Lonie Ferguson has been the manager of Pictou County’s Mount William Landfill. Lonie was a driving force for proper management of solid waste-resources long before there was a solid waste-management strategy. In spite of his experience, Lonie is a life-long learner, always researching new techniques for diverting more materials from the landfill and working with others to build associations like the Nova Scotia Association of Waste Reduction Coordinators and the Solid Waste Association of North America. Lonie is always striving to divert as much material as possible from the landfill. He was instrumental in establishing a compost facility at the Mount William landfill and in cleaning up many illegal dumpsites throughout Pictou County. Always an innovator, Lonie worked with a local welder to design recycling stations for public areas in Pictou County. And now that the Mount William landfill is closing at the end of the year, Lonie is working to establish a new transfer station on the site. For all his dedicated years of service toward protecting our environment, RRFB Nova Scotia presented Lonie Ferguson with the RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Environmental Award for Individual Excellence in Waste Management. |
