Last year at our awards, the volunteer fire fighters from Digby County were recognized. Again, this year our winner for the Volunteer of the Year award is also from Digby County. Greg Thomas, owner of Digby Salvage and Disposal, has been the driving force behind a plan to systematically clean up illegal dumpsites in the Municipality of Digby. Greg, who is an avid outdoorsman, wants to keep his community clean for all to enjoy. Not only does Greg do his part to keep the municipality clean, but also he motivates others in the community to do the same. In June of 2004, Greg was able to muster 30 volunteers to clean up an illegal dumpsite on the Fourth Lake Road. Armed with enthusiasm the volunteers cleaned up 13 tons of garbage and recyclables. Enthused by their success in cleaning up one site, Greg organized volunteers to tackle another large site in October, cleaning up another 9 tons of garbage and recyclable materials. Volunteers under Greg’s leadership have banded together to establish Citizens Against Illegal Dumping. Plans are under way for more community clean-ups in 2005. Greg Thomas accepted the RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Environmental Award for Volunteer of the Year. |
