The Municipality of East Hants is located within the Northern Waste-Resource Management Region. With a population of nearly 22,000 dispersed over 737 s quare miles, one would think that reducing waste in such a wide geographic area would be difficult. Not so with East Hants! With one of the highest diversion rates in the province, diverting 61% of its waste material from the landfill, the Municipality of East Hants has raised the bar for waste diversion in the province.

The Municipality can attribute its waste reduction success to many reasons. Foremost, the region offers diversion programs for a variety of materials such as scrap metal that otherwise would be end up in the landfill. In addition, the municipality offers waste reduction education and collection services to small businesses, institutions and schools within the municipality. To encourage recycling and diversion, tipping fees at the landfill are substantially reduced for recyclable and organic materials making recycling and composting not only good for the environment, but good for business too.

Former Warden, Lloyd Matheson, accepted the RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Environmental Award for Municipality of the Year on behalf of the Municipality of East Hants.
