Dykeland Lodge Nursing Home is located in Curry’s Corner near Windsor. The home provides long-term care for 110 seniors from the area. Several years ago, Dykeland Lodge decided to tackle their waste problem. They sought the advice of the municipal waste reduction educator, conducted a waste audit and established a green team with representation from all areas of the nursing home. Dykeland has a comprehensive waste diversion program, which separates materials into the appropriate organics and recyclable collection streams and diverts 60% of their waste material from the landfill. The success of Dykeland Lodge’s waste reduction program can be attributed to the team approach that Dykeland uses. All staff members work hard at reducing waste and protecting the environment for the grandchildren of their senior residents. Gary Cochrane, Director of Environmental Services, accepted the RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Environmental Award for Institution of the Year on behalf of Dykeland Lodge. |
