Region of the Year - Region Six Solid Waste Management
Region Six Solid Waste Management comprises eleven municipal units including the towns of Shelburne, Lockeport, Bridgewater, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, and Windsor and the municipalities of West Hants, Chester, Lunenburg, Queens Region, and Shelburne. The region has been a leader in many areas of waste reduction, recycling and composting. The Lunenburg area was the first area in the province to introduce green cart organics composting. When separating materials for recycling and composting in public areas became an issue, the rest of the province looked to Risser’s Beach for ideas on successful recycling and composting programs in a provincial park. And most recently when the rest of the province wanted quick-service restaurants to separate their waste materials, they looked to the success that the Bridgewater Mall has had in effective source-separation of waste materials. Region Six is now working with the school boards in their area to develop a comprehensive integrated waste-resource management policy for schools and their school boards that will be a model for other school boards across the province.
Last year at our awards Region Six won the award for the best community-based project with their Earth Day Challenge. This year Region Six has won the Region of the Year award.
Richard Dauphinee and Valda Walsh accepted the RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Environmental Award for Region of the Year.
