This year we have two Business of the Year winners. The judges felt that both
winners excelled in waste reduction but on a different scale and were equally deserving
of the award.

Sunflower Natural Foods, located in Antigonish has been in business for over 20 years. The store focuses on providing customers with the service and products that leave as small an ecological footprint as possible. Sunflower Natural Foods is a business dedicated to improving the well being of their customers and the environment.

Sunflower Natural Foods has been practicing waste reduction long before it was fashionable. The business reuses containers and buckets and encourages customers to do the same. Any surpluses, like burlap floor sacks, are given to local rug hookers. The store’s diversion rate is an amazing 85%. Everything that can be reused or recycled is, which leaves only one bag per week of garbage left for disposal.

Gail Elliot, owner of Sunflower Natural Foods accepted the RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Environmental Award for Business of the Year.
