For the past five years on Earth Day, Bernadette Jordon of Lighthouse Publishing has challenged readers to clean-up their community. Last year through the efforts of many partners spearheaded by Bernadette and Valda Walsh, the Regional Waste Reduction Coordinator, the challenge was extended to all the communities in Region Six. From West Hants, to Lunenburg, Queens and Shelburne, thousands of volunteers cleaned up their communities and collected over 8000 pounds of waste. Community businesses supported the Earth Day Challenge by donating gloves, garbage bags and food for the volunteers. This year Region Six Earth Day Challenge promises to be an even bigger event than in the previous years.

Bernadette Jordon accepted the RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Award for Best Community-based Project on behalf of Region Six.

Gold River-Western Shore Elementary School is located in Western Shore in the South Shore School District. The school has been a leader in waste management since 1990, long before the solid waste-resource strategy was implemented. The school is part of the SEEDS and Destination Conservation programs and has been reducing waste, recycling and composting for many years. The school has a garden, which is fertilized with compost from the school. The school also discourages littering and prevents students from eating packaged treats outside during recess. Students are active environmentalists even outside the school and participate in annual community and beach clean-ups.

Ian MacArthur, Crystal Labrador, Allison DeMont, and Jereemy Cooper all students of Gold River-Western Shore Elementary School accepted the RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Award for School of the Year.
