Ocean Contractors has supported the development of an asphalt shingle recycling system through partnership with Halifax C&D Recycling during a challenging research and development stage. As a result, they are the only hot-mix asphalt producer in the world to use recycled asphalt shingle grit.

Thanks to the development of this innovative solution, Ocean has diverted from landfill roughly 3,558 metric tonnes of recycled asphalt shingle grit product over the last 3 years.

In 2008, almost all private hot-mix asphalt paving jobs, completed by Ocean, used a percentage of recycled hot-mix asphalt shingle grit product for a total of more than 1,395 metric tonnes. It is anticipated that in 2009 Ocean will use even more.

In addition, Ocean partnered with Halifax C&D in lobbying the Department of Transportation agree to use Oceans recycled shingle grit pavement product in a provincial road which was the first time this was done anywhere in the world.

Rick Ramsay, Chair of RRFB Nova Scotia, and Bill Ring, CEO of RRFB Nova Scotia, presented the Mobius Environmental Award for Innovation in Waste Reduction to Steve Wellwood, Vice President Operations, Scott Flemming, Vice President, John Flemming, President, Steve MacKenzie, Chief Estimator and Mike Clements, Estimator/Project Manager of Ocean Contractors Limited.
