Since its humble beginnings in the summer of 1993, the Louisbourg Crab Festival has improved and grown stronger each year. It now boasts approximately 5,000 visitors annually during the festivals two day span.

Over the years, Solid Waste Management has moved to the top of planning committee's priority list. The committee members work diligently to include the three R's and ensure waste management stations are set up and monitored throughout the festival as part of green event planning. In 2008, more than 15 young adults monitored the waste separation containers, capturing unsorted waste materials and offering education on sorting to visitors from all over Canada, U.S. and overseas. They were, in fact, recycling ambassadors!

Last year, food waste captured and sent for composting totalled 1.51 metric tonnes. As well, over $700.00 was refunded based on the redeemable containers captured over the two-day period.

Rick Ramsay, Chair of RRFB Nova Scotia, and Bill Ring, CEO of RRFB Nova Scotia, presented the Mobius Environmental Award for Best Community-Based Project to Leo Carter, chairperson, Cindy Trimm Hynes, coordinator/secretary, and Philip Burke, treasurer, of the the Louisbourg Crab Festival Society.
