Every community has its leaders. Jill Clausson-Munro is one of those people. In the fall of 2006, she put a ‘waste reduction and recycling’ plan into action at the Aberdeen Hospital. Supported by Pat Lee, CEO of the Pictou County Health Authority (PCHA), and a handful of staff, she created a ‘green committee’ that worked hard to acquire grants and funding. Soon there were 250 sorting bins inside the hospital, and another collection of large containers outside building entrances. Today, the Aberdeen Hospital – alone – recycles, on average, 1.5 tonnes of blue bag recyclables each week.

The Honourable Bill Dooks, Minister of Tourism, and Rick Ramsay, Chair of RRFB Nova Scotia, presented the Mobius Environmental Award for Individual Excellence in Waste Reduction to Jill Clausson-Munro of the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow.

What if you were in charge of 150 apartment units in eight buildings? How would you inspire your apartment managers and 300 tenants, mostly university students and young professionals, to reduce waste? Here’s how Pat Monette does it: whenever a new lease is signed, Pat hands out a waste information kit. She and her staff chat with the tenants about waste sorting and she has a collection-and-bin-storage system that’s second to none. She also runs a program that lets new tenants use the old furniture, appliances and electronics that other tenants are tossing out. In nine years of curbside collection, drivers have never complained about storage bins at Pat’s Wolfville Court Apartments.
