SCHOOL OF THE YEAR

WINNER! École Le Marchant - St. Thomas School, Halifax

Minister of Environment and Labour Mark Parent (left) and Rick Ramsay, Chair of RRFB Nova Scotia (right) present the Mobius Award for School of the Year to École Le Marchant - St. Thomas School of Halifax, accepted here by school maintenance staffer Pam Couper, students Emma Leigh Murphy and Elizabeth MacDonald, members of the school's Green Energy Team, and Principal Pauline Murray, at the 9th Annual Mobius Environmental Awards held in Dartmouth on April 25, 2007.

Located in the heart of Halifax, École Le Marchant - St. Thomas School is a leader in recycling, composting and energy conservation education. And the many initiatives created by the School's amazing and inspiring "Green Energy Team" show us what a tremendous influence a small group of students can have.

Le Marchant- St. Thomas's parent association organizes regular fundraisers, including a Bingo Night - where food and drinks are sold before the game starts. At last February's Bingo Night, some of the school's Green Energy Team set up an information table where you could enter a draw to win energy-efficient prizes. Others monitored the source separation practices of parents and students, encouraging them to properly separate pizza plates, pop cans and food waste!

At school, they run "energy conservation workshops" followed by school-wide investigations to see how well light, water, heat and computer energy is being conserved. One person in particular, teacher Susan Murwin, is credited with enabling these student to take on real leadership roles in their daily lives.
